Renovating a bathroom sink-- Before and After

Before:
This dated, do-it-yourself, bathroom sink area needed an overhaul. There were mixed sizes of tiles and funky, 1950's era, mirrors and fixtures.

After:
A new porcelain sink is supported by a furniture style cabinet. There is white wainscoting on the wall. A partition between the sink and the toilet was removed to open up the room. A wood framed mirror (actually an old window with the glass removed and mirror panels installed) and a small wooden cabinet, for storage, complete the look. Now the bathroom compliments the rest of the 1914 vintage home.

Bathroom Storage Cabinet

This bathroom was in need of more storage. The wall to the right of the sink had space to add a recessed cabinet. There was no wiring to move. They just had to cut open the wall and built the cabinet. You can also purchase ready made cabinets from places like Rejuvenation. (Visit their website at Rejuvenation.com). In this case they made the box out of plywood, and then trimmed it out to match the moldings in the rest of the house. The door was purchased at a salvage company for $3.00. Some butterfly hinges and a latch were purchased at the hardware store. Then the whole cabinet was painted white. To finish it off they had some glass shelves cut to fit. Using period looking hardware and matching the moldings makes a nice addition to this 1914 bungalow. The attention to details is what adds value.

Shower tile work- new bathroom

When deciding to renovate a bathroom shower, you may want to keep in mind how it affects the resale value of your home. Colors and styles that you love may not appeal to others. Neutral  colors makes it easier for more potential buyers to imagine themselves living in the house. If buyers stongly dislike a style or unusual color, they may deduct the cost of replacing the shower from their offer price, even if the tile work is new.
Here is a phote of a recent shower we added to our bathroom. We went with a style that harmonizes with our 1914 bungalow. We used white subway tiles on the walls and hex tiles on the floor. The work was done by Cheryle Suazo of NW Property Renovations (503-348-4769). We love her work and can highly recommend her!

We went with white grout on the walls and a slightly darker grout for the floor.
